The works currently known as the Flood panels were originally the wings of a triptych, the central panel of which has been lost.
There are four tondi on the outside of the wings. The images concern difficulties or trials that can only be overcome with God’s help. The tondo at top left shows a man being tormented by a number of devils. At bottom left, a fellow who has just survived a shipwreck is blessed by Christ. At the top of the right-hand wing, a woman flees a burning building while her child, who can be seen through the gate, is beaten by a devil. The bottom tondo shows a farmer who - while he is sowing and harrowing - is robbed of his horse by the devil. The other side of the left-hand panel depicts Noah’s Ark, which has just run aground atop Mount Ararat. The animals rush from the vessel; the great flood is over. On the reverse of the right-hand wing, the Last Judgment has just taken place, and the world is overrun by demons and monsters.
